Back in September, I flew down to Denver to make a little adventure with Devin. We try to get out at least once a year together and this year's trip was a good one. Arriving at DEN, Devo picked me up and we headed to grab the rest of the crew; his buddy Chauncey and rockstar photographer Russ Schnizter, who I know through our work with TU and various fishing friends.
Upon corralling the gang, we pointed southwest for the town of Gunnison. After a campout in Black Canyon National Recreation Area and one of the fattest upper-lip bug bites I'll ever get in my life (hopefully), we met up with Chris Mortimer of Gunnison River Pro. Chris usually rents out rafts to DIYers, but he and his buddy (who was a dead ringer for Hunter S. Thompson) opted to join us for three days through the Gunnison Gorge.
We put in at Chukar boat ramp and watched one of Mortimer's DIY trips put on before us by taking Chukar I (a class III rapid) backwards in their 16' NRS. Whoops.
Four days of class III and IV whitewater, catching 20" Browns, and chasing chukar around like a bunch of fools made for one of the best floats I've been on in a long time. If you're thinking of a Gunnison Gorge trip, give Mortimer a call.
